Snowshoeing in downtown Montreal

Hiker: Alexandra Larose, Montreal

Montreal really is a wonderful city. In addition to its several bars and many trendy restaurants, unique stores and festivals for everyone’s taste, the metropolis offers in its center a beautiful green space, magnificently fitted out for both inhabitants and visitors.

Hiking in donwtown MontrealMount Royal Park offers, on more than 190 hectares of wooded areas, a variety of free winter activities, such as skating on naturally frozen or refrigerated outdoor rink, cross-country skiing, sliding on inner tube, or even snowshoeing!

As I am a city girl myself and the newly owner of a pair of GV snowshoes, I had been looking forward to test it without covering a hundred kilometres – these expeditions will follow later, stay tuned!

So it was on a beautiful and snowy Saturday that I made my way to the Mount Royal Park by car. It’s very easy to reach from the Camillien-Houde way and to use the municipal parking lots – with meters – which all make it a pretty cheap day. Indeed, your cross-country skiing or snowshoeing event will only cost you the parking price, especially if you bring your own equipment! And the mountain is also accessible by public transportation; get out at Mont-Royal metro station and take bus #11.

Plenty of snowshoe marked trails, as well as unbeaten tracks, await you in the Mount Royal Park. Moreover, the Maison Smith recommends you the Café des Amis, where you can relax – just like me – after your hike with a lovely cup of hot chocolate. There’s nothing better, I’m telling you!
