Great snacks for hiking

March 8, 2016

Your body requires fuel and nutriments to function efficiently when you plan to conquer mountains and woods here in Quebec and abroad, particularly during the winter months. Fair enough, careful preparation is the key to successful hikes! Among other things, healthy and balanced snacks will help you take full advantage of your outdoor activity. Here are some ideas for you!

A healthy snack

A healty and hearthy snack for hikingNot only the perfect snack should be delicious, but it has to be nutritious in order to boost your energy. Therefore, it should provide carbohydrates, the primary energy source for both body and brain, as well as proteins to support your strained muscles. Dried fruits (much easier and convenient than juicy fruits) and pieces of cheese, vegetables and mixed nuts or a cereal bar with a drinkable yogurt are just a few examples of healthy and delicious snacks. Choose what’s best for you, according to your tastes and needs.

Water, naturally

Water is certainly your best ally when you practice your favourite winter sport. The appropriate amount will depend on the intensity level of your hike, but keep in mind that it’s recommended to drink approximately 1.5 litres of water per day. Otherwise, as it gets cold during wintertime, a hot beverage may be a great choice! Here is a simple recipe of a good warmed apple cider that we found for you:

  • 250 ml apple juice
  • 250 ml water
  • 15 ml maple syrup
  • 1 stick of cinnamon
  • 1 ml freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 pinch of salt

Mix all the ingredients, bring to the boil, remove the cinnamon stick, transfer into a stainless steel thermos and voilà, you’re ready to get started on your snowshoeing or skiing treks!
